Chapter Seven
Two weeks had passed and I hadnât heard a dickey bird from Rose. I couldnât stand it not being able to see her; it gave me chills, it did. Iâd found it hard to sleep, my appetite had gone and Effie practically had to bribe me to eat.
âMaybe I should send for the doctor, Amelia, you really do look pale today,â she said.
If she knew about my unnatural thoughts towards Rose, she might turn to hate me. I couldnât lose her friendship not now, not ever. But keeping my secret as I did was making me sick and I knew it would be just a matter of time before she got it out of me anyway. Our companionship was in peril and I was afraid.
I waited till Effie had lit the fire and finished pottering around me to tell her what was ailing me. It was hard trying to find the words, to make âem come out of my mouth and not sound so unpleasant to her ears.
âEffie, can I tell you a secret?â I said.
I was sitting in the arm chair and had had it moved to face the window so that I was able to look out into the street, silly really, but I thought that I might catch sight of Rose somehow. I thought she might have come to spill her guts and tell me how she really felt about me. This just left me feeling like a bigger mug than I did before.
âAnd what secret would that be now, Amelia?â she asked. She was plumping the cushions on the sofa, giving âem a right bashing, she was.
âMy heart has been taken by someone so beautiful. I cannot even begin to describe how Iâm feeling inside.â I told her.
âOh, Amelia, my poor sweet girl. Now that I come to think of it, how youâve been acting so vague, I think that you might have the green sickness, youâve gone and fallen in love. Who is he and when did this happen?â she asked.
âI think you should sit down for this, Effie.â I clasped my hands together on my lap and looked down at them, more like in shame.
She didnât look too sure of herself and a worried look crossed her face. âAm I being given the sack?â she asked.
âEffie, as long as I live I hope we will remain friends. I need a trusting companion right now, especially one like you. Iâm in love with Rose.â There I said it.
She fell backwards and lucky for her the sofa was right behind. The look on her face said it all, she was horrified.
âWhat do you mean youâre in love with Rose?â she asked.
âI wish she could hear my secret thoughts, see how I imagine her touching me with her delicate fingers. She kissed me, and thatâs why I was crying so hard when I came back from visiting her.â
âShe kissed you. Did she force you to kiss her?â Effieâs voice had turned high, probably from the shock that I had just given her.
