“Joshua didn’t fall down,” Otis said later, after Josh had been taken away in the ambulance. “Somebody hurt him, I just know it. I’ll bet when he wakes up he’ll tell someone, and the police will be here first thing tomorrow.”

But the following morning they walked into the dining room and found everyone acting as if nothing unusual had happened. “Look, Mrs. Crane and Frank Warren are talking and eating their muffins as if they didn’t have a worry in the world,” said Otis.

“Sniff ’um, muffins,” Cody muttered.

“Think of something besides palindromes, Cody,” hissed Rae.

“Yeah,” Otis seconded, “let’s see if we can find out what’s going on.”

The three of them approached the table. “We’ve been worried about Joshua,” said Otis. “What happened to him? Is he all right?”

Mrs. Crane and Mr. Warren both smiled. “Thank you for asking. Joshua will be fine. It was lucky he wasn’t far from the lodge. He must have fallen and hit his head. Then the cold made him delirious enough to remove some of his clothes.”

“I’ve heard about that happening when people get lost in the cold,” said Rae.

“I don’t see how he could have gotten lost, but he was out in the cold for hours. The doctors said he’s lucky—he just has a little frostbite. He’ll be out of the hospital today and back to training soon. There was no concussion, but he can’t remember a thing that happened after he went out for his walk.”
