Optimising nutrition for an awesome mane
You may have heard before the saying âyou are what you eatâ. While I don't wholeheartedly agree with this cliché, I have seen on myself and on others what optimal nutrition can do to one's hair and even life. From better curls to a better body to an overall better life, your nutrition should be optimised to cater to your lifestyle as a 21st century male.
âOrganicâ, âfat-freeâ, âAtkins dietâ, âfree of preservativesâ, âno-carb pizzaâ or âaspartameâ are just some of the fancy words that we get bombarded with every day. For the most part, we don't know what they are or what they really mean, and unfortunately we have to live with the fact that many companies and people out there take advantage of semantic boundaries and wrongful associations. Organic food is twice as expensive as non-organic food, yet being organic doesn't guarantee it to be healthier or diet friendly as many people wrongfully think of organic foods. Likewise, low-fat products are not necessarily healthier than their regular counterparts, and, many times, the fat content of the former is substituted by adding lots of sugar and other just as unhealthy ingredients (e.g. high-fructose corn syrup) to mask the food's otherwise bland taste. In fact, next time that you are in the supermarket, go to the dairy section and read the ingredients of the flashiest and most-colourful low-fat yoghurt that you can find on display, and see this nutritional dichotomy for yourself.
Over the years, I have found that whatever diet I chose that improved my health also had the side effect of improving my hair. The body is a perfect machine relying on homeostasis and biological harmony, hence a change in one bodily process will have a knock-on effect on other bodily processes, and thus the need to see one's diet as a way to improve one's health and body as a whole and, by default, one's hair. What's more is that an optimal diet and nutritional approach will not only improve the looks of your awesome mane but also ensure that your hair remains atop your head for a long time.
Your hair follicles are alive, and, for them to produce hair, they need optimal nutrition as well as blood flow to deliver the right nutrients. Your hair follicles are dug in your skin, the latter (skin) being the largest organ in the body, so a lot of internal processes are going on to allow the hair follicles to continue to produce hair material (i.e. hair strands) non-stop. Thus, while throwing exotic ingredients on your hair strands in the hopes that your hair can breathe more oxygen or can live happily is an exercise in futility, there is certainly quite a merit and good sense in trying to get optimal nutrients delivered to your hair follicles endogenously (i.e. via your diet and nutritional approach).
There is no one-and-only nutritional approach to making your hair look its best. In my case, the nutritional approach that I have used
