That afternoon we ended up in China, on what looked to me like the edge of a rice field. From there, we hopped on an abandoned raft and sailed across the continent. The riverbanks were dotted with exotic plants and some kind of Chinese apple tree in bloom. It was absolutely gorgeous.

Then we visited unexplored lands that hadn’t yet been claimed.

“Can you imagine if everyone started planting flags everywhere to say, ‘this belongs to me, and that belongs to you’?”

“Meow.”

“Can you picture the chaos?”

“Meow.”

“The Earth belongs to everyone!”

“Meow.”

“What if we planted a flag to say that it belongs to everyone?”

“Meow.”

“Okay. I’ll put both our names on it.”

But since we didn’t have a flag, we just wrote our message in the sand of the riverbank.

This land belongs to everyone.

Billy Robinson-Rousseau and Meow

Next, we headed straight to Paris. Now I understand why people call it the City of Light: it’s where they keep all the electrical wires. I recognized the Eiffel Tower right away.

We played hide-and-seek with little French children in the surrounding parks—probably the Champs-Élysées or the Tuileries Garden. Billy knew a bunch of the other kids, which made me think he must travel a lot. With a bike like his, that didn’t surprise me.

We were having a lot of fun, but it was time to go. Night was about to fall and blanket everything in darkness, and we were still thousands of kilometres from home. I slipped back into Billy’s hood and then into a deep sleep. I wasn’t used to so much playing, so much running around. I couldn’t feel my body anymore. Only my overexcited heart continued to beat wildly.

Billy hid me in his room for the night. He let me sleep on his pillow, bathed in his pumpkin smell. I slept like a rock, my dreams filled with raging rivers and trees heavy with ham slices ripe for the picking.
