RAHENI GONZALEZ SPEAKS:

In 1996, I was invited to a two-spirit ceremony where I began doing the work of healing colonial trauma and dismantling, within myself, colonized ways of thinking and being. I became very devoted to the Sacred Red Road and have had various teachers, elders, and mentors along the way. Through my involvement with Indigenous ceremonies, I gained much knowledge and developed a passion for creating altars/portals for healing and connecting with ancestors. I also have a passion for plants and enjoy making plant medicine, including salves for pain and various sprays for protection and cleansing.

When I’m having a hard time, the first thing I do is go to my altar, burn some medicine, light a candle, and communicate with my ancestors and guides and ask them for guidance. When I feel energetically off, I will give myself a limpia with the same Superior 70 Alcoholado my abuela used. The smell of it instantly calms and grounds me.

The plant used to make it is called malagueta. Its fragrance is similar to bay laurel, which grows in the hills of Huchiun. At the beginning of a walk there, I always ask permission to grab a bay laurel leaf so that I can inhale its scent as I walk among the trees. This simple act is deep medicine for me. Taking me back to those nights of being doused with alcoholado. Bringing me “home.” So malagueta was the first plant I ever deeply connected to. I didn’t know then that I would develop such a deep relationship to the earth and the plants.

Now, as an adult, my garden is my sanctuary, and it heals me on all levels . . . energetically, physically, and spiritually. From healing teas to gathering fresh herbs for limpias like lavender, pericón, romero, and ruda, my garden is the onestop shop for healing! You can find a plant for just about any ailment, and this is very important for survival.
