Nia awoke with a start, blinking against the fluorescent lights of the hospital room. She didn't remember falling asleep, but the heaviness of exhaustion clung to her limbs. A knock on the door pulled her fully awake, and she turned to see Janet entering the room, a worried expression on her face. She carried a neatly folded set of dry clothes.

"Oh, dear. How are you feeling?" Janet asked, her voice laced with concern as she approached the bed.

Nia tried to sit up, groaning as her muscles protested. "I'm okay, just sore and tired," she said, accepting the clothes Janet handed her. "Thanks for bringing these."

"It was the least I could do." Janet pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat. "You had me worried sick when you told me what happened. Eli fell into the lake?"

“And I dove in after him.” Nia changed into the dry clothes. “It was a close call, but we got out okay. We have the Nightshade County Sheriff’s Department to thank. Without their help, I’m not sure what would have happened.”

"You need to be careful, Nia."

"We were searching for Cam," Nia said. "After checking the lakeshore, we found signs that someone might have been in the woods, but we can't be sure it was him. There were footprints near the water, but nothing definitive. Any idea if Cam likes Nike sneakers?"

“I’ll ask Autumn. But I suppose her nephew isn’t the only person who wears those sneakers.”

“True.”

Janet's face fell. "Oh, Nia. Do you think there's any hope that it’s Cam?"

"I don't want to jump to conclusions, and I definitely don't want to get Autumn's hopes up without more evidence. Can we keep this between us for now?"

"I won't say anything to Autumn until you know more. She's been so frantic, and I know how much she wants to believe that Cam is alive."

"I understand, but let’s get concrete proof before we tell her anything. The last thing we want is to give her false hope."

Janet reached out and squeezed Nia's hand. "You're doing everything you can, Nia. You and Eli. Promise me you'll be careful. We can't afford to lose either of you."

Nia appreciated the gesture. "I promise I'll be careful. And we'll find Cam and get Autumn the answers she deserves."

Janet sighed, looking around the hospital room. "I wish there was more I could do. Waiting and worrying make the search unbearable."

"The best thing Eli and I can do is keep in touch with Nightshade County. They have an excellent team."

"If you need anything, I'm here for you, Nia."

“You’ve done enough, Janet.” Nia noticed the clock. The bus would drop off Maya in thirty minutes, and there was no telling when the doctor would let Nia leave. “I hate to ask, but—”

“Maya. I’ll be home when she arrives. And don’t worry about dinner. I’m baking eggplant, and there is always enough for four.”

“Four?”

“You, me, Maya, and Eli,” Janet said. She stood to leave, giving Nia no time to protest. "Call me when you arrive home.
