CHAPTER SIX

ZOE went upstairs to change into a brief pair of cut-off jeans and a cotton shirt. The shorts ended above the stings and tying the tails of the shirt above her midriff would keep the other stings uncovered. Zoe decided to forego ice applications. The welts were less red and swollen already, giving her hope that she could return to normal activity the next day.

Drowsy from the antihistamine, she wandered downstairs and found the TV remote before she lounged on the sofa to scan the channels. She eventually settled on a national news channel, then tugged a nearby afghan over her for warmth against the air-conditioning, bending her knees to tent the fabric over the welts. She drifted into a nap soon after, and awakened later on her side, the afghan still over her.

The entertainment segment of the news channel came on and Zoe focused sleepily on it as she moved into a sitting position. She was trying to locate the remote to adjust the sound when a film excerpt of Jason and Angela Sedgewick came on.

Zoe’s heart clenched at the unexpected feature, the surprise jolting her fully awake. She watched tensely as a montage of selective clips crossed the screen, the half dozen showing the Sedgewicks in some of their most volatile roles—from their vituperative exchange in The Thorn, to their Oscar-winning roles as maliciously clever schemers in Wicked Ways.

The reporter’s story was to the point. “According to the unauthorized biography by Dillon Casey, the offscreen performances of the Sedgewicks bear close resemblance to some of their darkest and most critically acclaimed roles. From alleged infidelities of both during their twenty-five year marriage, their purported make-or-destroy influence over more than one actor’s film career, to their alleged emotional abandonment of the daughter they adopted, Dillon Casey’s tell-all book promises to be one of the most shocking revelations of the private lives of Hollywood greats ever written.”

The segment went to a commercial and Zoe frantically made a new search for the remote. She finally found it on the floor just under the edge of the sofa, then switched it off. She sank back against the cushions as a huge wave of dread swept her.

News coverage had started—a full two weeks before she’d anticipated. Other than local newscasts and the small area newspaper, she hadn’t watched or read much news since she’d got to Hayes, so it was possible coverage had begun days ago. And that meant every weekly magazine from Newsweek to the rags might be running articles. If any of them mentioned Bobby and Becky by name or gave away their location on the Hayes Ranch…

The thought sent Zoe springing from the sofa and hurriedly refolding the afghan. They’d been in the local pharmacy that afternoon and it hadn’t occurred to her to check the magazine rack. The idea that the small towns nearby might already be saturated with news of the Sedgewicks sent her charging upstairs to change her clothes.

Mindless of the stings, Zoe tore through the armoire, trying to decide what to wear for a fast trip to town.
