How Some Copywriters Earn 100X What Others Do
Susan: Excellent, now you wanted to talk about some of the other opportunities copywriters have to get paid â can you explain?
Roy: Thereâs a couple that I think are great.
I guess the first one that I should mention is what I did in the very beginning. If you are new to copywriting and you just want an income and maybe benefits and the potential for growth and learning, then getting a job is not a bad thing to do. It can be a bridge toward becoming a freelancer.
Maybe that means working for one of the major direct marketers. Or it may involve working for a small business and taking a larger role in their marketing.
The major direct marketers hire in-house copywriters, and thatâs both a great training ground and an instant reputation booster. For example, having worked for an Agora division is an almost instant âinâ with many clients in the industry. There are many big direct marketing companies who hire in-house copywriters. Some will require you to work in-office â which also means moving if youâre not in their city. But some will let you work from home, as long as youâre responsive to their needs and not using working from home as an excuse to goof off.
It can also be a great opportunity to work for a small business. You can end up running a marketing department, writing copy, and doing a lot of other things just like I did. That can also be a further learning ground for your marketing and copywriting abilities.
Usually working in a small business does require you to be more self-directed. Youâll have to spearhead the implementation of direct response strategies. If youâre not dealing with a boss or business owner thatâs oriented toward direct response, sometimes testing new approaches can be challenging. But with the right attitude, there can be a ton of opportunity in this approach. And if youâre getting results, that will speak for itself.
There are also gigs you can get in ad agencies, bigger companies, and other job-type environments. At the risk of sweeping generalities, most of these are institutionally opposed to direct response. If you want to measure your effectiveness and get paid based on results, youâre unlikely to find those opportunities here. I generally recommend copywriters with their mind set on direct response avoid these situations in favor of actual direct response companies or more entrepreneurial companies in general.
The second opportunity for copywriters to get paid is in actually creating their own business. Youâre actually walking the walk using your own copy to sell products or services â and Iâm not talking about your copywriting business here.
I did this with my dad very early in my marketing journey. He had recorded a video about how to cut foam wings for model airplanes. He uses a fairly innovative method, and the video was full of valuable content.
Heâd been selling it on eBay, but sales tapered off. So I said, âLetâs set up a website, and Iâll write all the copy and create all the marketing for it.
