Three of Gu Kaizhi’s paintings supposedly survive today. Perhaps the most well-known one is Nymph of the Luo River. This is a section of the copy held at the Liaoning Provincial Museum.

The painting Travelers Among Mountains and Streams by Fan Kuan, painted on silk, is known in part for how small the human figures of the painting look against the elements of nature.

The religion and philosophy of Daoism (also spelled “Taoism”) has had a profound impact on Chinese life and culture, including art. Among other principles, Daoism emphasizes harmony with (and respect for) nature, and this philosophy is reflected in much Chinese landscape art, including the work of Fan Kuan and his contemporaries.
