Peurré’s office looked as though a child had been let loose to throw paper and books everywhere and amidst this, were two very tired-looking men.
He said to Édouard, “I think the time has come to speak to Cabov.”
“He’s quite likely to be enjoying our dilemma and lack of action.”
“He won’t enjoy the consequences. That call from the Minister was to say that the President has cleared us to take all necessary action.”
“Including something within Russia?”
“Yes.”
“You know my views on that. However, if that’s what it takes then so be it. I’ve already worked out a few scenarios, teams required etc. and can get something started within 24 hours of an order.”
“La Rose has his men at strategic positions around Petite France and they’re keeping low, waiting for instructions.”
“I don’t want any gung-ho, action-man nonsense which is why La Rose is there in attendance. We can trust him to take the best route forward.”
“I have Jean telephoning his counterpart at the Russian Embassy to tell them our counter-measures will start within Russia in 24 hours unless they put a stop to this.”
At that point his telephone rang. Grabbing it, Peurré said, “Oui? Yes Jean. No, fuck that! Tell them to pass a message to Cabov that we meet on the Glienicke Bridge at 10pm tonight. I don’t care what your opposite number is saying. Tell the bastard it’s 10pm there. No further discussion!”
Édouard examined the back of his hand and his immaculately manicured nails, softly papered to give the best sound when he played his guitar. He imagined himself finally managing to play Bach’s Chaconne in D minor as perfectly as he had heard it performed the year before. What a powerful and steady start it had then it built and built, sombre but sweet.
“Édouard?” He dropped his hand and looked up as Bach faded. God, he was tired. Peurré stared at him, “He’s going to call back. I’m going to meet Cabov alone but I want you there, staying well back and observing. Read the body language; of everyone, you know the Russians best.”
Édouard looked at the shell that remained of Peurré and said, “We’d better get some rest before tonight.”
Peurré snatched up the telephone and shouted, “The Minister’s chef please. I don’t care if he was about to go home. Get him to bring up the same platter he prepared for me last time - he’ll know what that is - immediately!” He looked over at Édouard and smiled slightly. “It’s always best to die on a full stomach.”
Édouard thought about the dangers of this meeting. Both sides were thinking that a single sniper shot could weaken the other dramatically. He thought how much easier life would be without Cabov, but knew the Russians would immediately kill Peurré and France would be very much weakened.
Édouard said, “Why don’t you let me go instead? He’ll be just as happy meeting with me again.”
Peurré thought of the horror Édouard had endured under interrogation by Cabov’s team. He had given little away, until he was saved by an American spy swap.
