JEWELS OF FËANOR The Silmarils (q.v.). (S 181. B 219.)

JOLLY COTTON Wilcome Cotton (q.v.). (III 354; ’93 ed. 320; ’01 ed. 311.)

KALI See: Kalimac. (III 517; ’93 ed. 478; ’01 ed. 463.)

KALIMAC (gen. Mannish) Buckland personal name, originally derived from the language used by the Stoors before coming to the Shire. It was almost always shortened to Kali, which meant ‘jolly, gay’ in Westron.

See: Meriadoc Brandybuck. (III 517; ’93 ed. 478; ’01 ed. 463.)

KARNINGUL (gen. West.: ‘cut valley’) Rivendell (q.v.). (III 515; ’93 ed. 476; ’01 ed. 461.)

KEEPERS OF THE THREE RINGS The Eldar who wielded the Rings of Power of the Elves. At first Gil-galad held Vilya, Círdan held Narya, and Galadriel held Nenya. Sometime before his death Gil-galad gave his Ring to Elrond, and at the coming of the Istari to Middle-earth Círdan gave Narya to Gandalf. At the end of the Third Age the Last Riding of the Keepers (q.v.) carried the Rings over Sea.

Also called the Keepers of the Rings and the Three Keepers. (III 456, 471; ’93 ed. 417, 470; ’01 ed. 403, 418. S 304. B 378.)

KELOS See: Celos. (I 18; ’93 ed. 16; ’01 ed. xvi. III 14; ’93 ed. 16; ’01 ed. xvi.)

KELVAR (Q.: ‘quick ones’) Animate living things under the care of Yavanna—that is, all animate beings except the Children of Ilúvatar, the Ents, and the Dwarves. Apparently the Eagles of Manwë are the highest of the kelvar, just as the Ents are of the olvar. (S 45–46, 337. B 43–44, 419.)

KEMENTÁRI (Q.: ‘earth-queen’) The surname of Yavanna (q.v.). (S 28, 360. B 21, 452.)

KEY OF ORTHANC Actually, two black keys of intricate shape, used to lock the door of Orthanc. (II 240, 245; ’93 ed. 221, 226; ’01 ed. 207, 212.)

KEYS OF BARAD-DÛR The keys to the Dark Tower, a symbol of Sauron’s power. (II 240; ’93 ed. 222; ’01 ed. 208.)

KHAND Realm southeast of Mordor, home of the Variags (q.v.). Because of its location, Khand was probably always strongly influenced by Sauron. (I 17; ’93 ed. 15; ’01 ed. xv. III 148, 409; ’93 ed. 133, 370; ’01 ed. 121, 360.)

KHAZD (Kh.) The name given to the Dwarves (q.v.) by Aulë at their making, their own name for themselves.

The Sindarin form is Hadhod. (III 519; ’93 ed. 479; ’01 ed. 464–65. S 91. B 104.)

KHAZAD-DÛM (Kh.: ‘dwarf-mansion’) Greatest of the Dwarf-halls, the mansion and folk-home of Durin’s Folk, carved by Durin I early in the First Age in the caves overlooking Azanulbizar. Here was located the tomb of Durin, and here dwelt the heart of his people. Expanded many times, Khazad-dûm ultimately took up much of the area beneath Barazinbar, Zirak-zigil, and Bundushathûr, and in the Second Age a tunnel was built to Eregion. Khazad-dûm consisted of many large halls on a number of levels, as well as mines, etc.

At the end of the First Age, the population of Khazad-dûm was increased, as many skilled Dwarves from the Ered Luin came there after the ruin of Nogrod and Belegost.
