Chapter Twenty-Five - Rescue Me

Kat and Andy arrived at the shore first. Rather than climb down the cliff to the beach, Kat nosed the broomstick lower. She laughed when Andy let out a sharp yipe. “Don’t worry. I think I’m getting the hang of this,” she yelled over the rushing wind. When Andy leaned forward and wrapped his arms tighter around her waist, she smiled.

The broomstick halted just above the ground. Andy rolled off the broom onto his back. This time Kat jumped off with confidence. No shaking legs. Laughing, she stuck out her hand and helped Andy up.

She sobered when thoughts of Mordita came to her. “I hope Aunt Thordis and Mom can find Mordita.”

Andy nodded. “That was an awesome battle. I’ve never been so scared, even when the snakes grabbed me.”

Kat put her hands on her hips and surveyed the ultralight. Its broken wing hung limply, while the undamaged one had folded itself into the upright position. “I hope we can fix you up, little fella.” She patted the backrest. A purr from the plane heartened her.

A loud buzz brought their attention to the cliff top. The buzzing stopped, and she saw Rune’s face peering down at her. She waved. His face disappeared, and the next view was of his legs dropping over the edge, his feet seeking a foothold.

Kat put her hand to the side of her mouth and yelled at him. “Do you want the broom?”

Rune looked down at her, nodded vigorously, and pulled himself up to the top again. Kat turned to the broom. “Get Rune, please.” The broomstick waggled up and down in what might be a nod before it jetted upward.

Rune rode the broom to the beach, hopped off, and immediately went to the ultralight to examine it. Ivansi refused a ride, opting to climb down instead.

When Kat’s grandfather reached the beach the old-fashioned way, he joined Rune in a three-way discussion, one-third in English, one-third in New Runish, and the last third in Sami. The two appeared to have worked out how to speak to each other. Kat grinned at her talented little brother. Oh, they grow up so fast.

Ivansi took the toolkit from the boat. The pair soon had the broken wing removed from the plane. They straightened struts and used some stout fishing line to tie everything together then replaced the wing back on the ultralight.

“If we had chewing gum and baling twine, we could have fixed it faster,” Rune joked. Ivansi smiled, and Kat wondered if he got Rune’s silly joke.

“How are you going to take off? You need a little runway room, and this beach is too small.” Kat looked worriedly at the tiny bit of sand they stood on.

“Hmm. I’m not sure, but I think we can use the boat to tow it.”

“What are you talking about? The ultralight doesn’t have pontoons; it’s got wheels. As you can plainly see,” Kat replied, waving her hand at the little machine.

“Of course, Kat,” Rune said, his tone heating up. “You must think I’m stupid!”

Kat shook her finger at Rune.
