Chapter Twelve
It was decided the evening before entering the palace gates that the nomads would assist Rowanda, Emeraza, and Beir by any means they could. The first step was to get all three safely into the palace city. From there, nomads would flood the streets to find out any gossip surrounding Boultori, while Rowanda and Emeraza remained hidden out of sight. Beirimor, too, would stay out of sight for the time being. He had only been gone for one month, and many city dwellers knew the king would be thrilled to have him in custody once more.
To alleviate suspicion, the nomads would set up stalls to sell their wares. The chieftain promised Emeraza not to sell any of the slaves he acquired during his time in the desert. That promise was difficult for the chieftain as he counted the lost pieces of gold in his head.
Emeraza spoke freely as they sat on cushions enjoying their evening meal the night before they were to enter the palace gates. "Once Boultori becomes king, and King Nashua is overthrown, there will be no need of slaves." That thought only made the chieftain sullener as he realized he would never get any reimbursement for the many slaves now in his possession.
"Give them a choice to join your caravan, and maybe you will have willing helpers. In the long run, these humans may be even more profitable as part of your family. Many of them are craftsmen and can make lovely items to sell. If they choose to return to their own homes, you may not stop them. Rowanda has tasked the terpor to watch over them. I know you would not want hundreds of terpor to return to your camp if you repress the people under their protection, would you?" Emeraza said with a sweet smile on her face that somehow seemed to make the chieftain's heart sink.
The chieftain was beginning to realize that life as he knew it may not stay the same. He wanted to believe that things would be better for his people as well. He had no real choice but to align himself with these sorceresses. The mental picture of the terpors surrounding his camp made him feel weak inside.
The next morning, the nomad caravan was moving towards the gates to the palace city. Rowanda, Beir, and Emeraza rode in one of the litters carried by many stout men. The curtains were drawn against the harsh sun and wind. Rowanda and Emeraza wore veils to hide their faces as the city guards were known to check most litters. Before getting to the gates, Beir got out of the cart and took his place alongside the other men to help carry the litter through the gates. It was doubtful the guards would give him a second glance since he was acting like a slave.
The krerri walked alongside Rowanda's litter. As they stopped at the entrance of the palace city walls, guards huddled together to decide who would be the one to check the passengers held within.
