Chapter Seven

Arabella

My heart is breaking for Tate.

I’ve never seen him so shaken. It affects us all in different ways, some days more than others. But this has him devastated.

“What happened?” I know it’ll be hard, but he’s better to talk about it. Bottling these feelings inside is not good. Especially when he could be called for an emergency again any moment. He needs to pull his head together. Unless you’re a doctor, no one can understand how good we need to be at compartmentalizing our thoughts. The biggest fault we have, though, is remembering to go back and unpack some of those boxes, before the compartments become too full.

“Hemorrhage, totally unrelated to the tumor I’ve been treating. Life fucking sucks some days. That woman fought cancer and was winning, only to be taken out from something she never saw coming.” Sighing, he steps away from me, pulling himself together. “I know she was old and had lived a full life. It doesn’t mean she didn’t have more to give.” He walks over to the window and stares out, motionless.

“Sorry, Bella, I shouldn’t have done that to you. We agreed. I’ll be okay. I always am.”

Giving him a moment to settle his thoughts, I slowly walk up behind him and wrap my arms around his waist.

“Some rules are meant to be broken on special occasions. Besides, I know you’re not big on obeying the rules anyway.” He sniggers and turns in my arms. “I mean you’ve been kissing your best friend’s sister who is your student. Umm, hello – rule breaking 101, did you even listen in class?” With that he bursts out laughing and pulls me into his chest hard for a moment, then lets me go.

“That is why I want you in my life. You get me more than you realize. Thanks, baby. I needed that laugh.” Just as his head is about to drop to kiss me, the door starts to open, and I jump so far backwards I almost fall flat on my ass.

While I’m flustering over catching my balance, Tate stands up straight, afraid to put his hands out to steady me. As soon as I hear his voice behind me, I know why.

“Hey, buddy, just checking in…oh, hi, Bella, what are you doing here?”

I hesitate, still trying to get my mouth to work.

“In case you’ve forgotten because that little brain of yours can only hold small amounts of information, she’s a doctor and works here, too. Boss… student, remember?” Tate says, pointing between us.

“Like I can forget, dickwad. And here I was coming to check you’re okay. Should’ve known there’s no heart in there, just a brain full of smartass comments.” Anyone who didn’t know Grayson and Tate would think they hate each other at times. But this is how they are toward one another; they know what they need.

Gray’s arm wraps around my shoulder which for the first time makes me feel different. That used to give me a sense of security and safety.

Now it just makes me nervous.
