Chase

I woke the next morning feeling better than I had in a while. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d woken up with a smile on my face.

And it was all thanks to the woman lying beside me in bed.

I looked at Emma, noting how beautiful she still looked to me. I found I liked all her looks.

I reached out and lightly traced a finger over her forehead, down to her cheek, across the bridge of her nose, and to her lips.

She breathed deeply as my fingers grazed her chin and her eyes fluttered open. Her sleepy gaze met my only slightly more awake one.

“Morning,” I told her, leaning over to brush my lips lightly against hers.

“Morning,” she whispered in return.

She rolled to face me, and I did the same. We lay there, neither of us speaking or moving for the longest time. As weird as it sounded, it was nice not worrying about what was going to happen next or what anything might mean. We were just existing together.

I felt a little sappy thinking that way, but it was the truth. For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t worried about the next ball game, the next at bat, or anything baseball related. I was just in the here and now with Emma.

“You want some breakfast?”

I was about to agree when I thought to check the time. I propped myself up on my elbow and looked over my shoulder at the clock on the nightstand there. I winced.

“I wish I could,” I said, my mind moving at full speed. “I need to get by and see my mom today. Since I didn’t finish up last night, I need to get to the stadium early today to get ready for the game.”

I looked back at Emma and caught her expression falling.

I leaned over and kissed her softly again. “If I didn’t need to see my mom, I’d stick around. I promise. But she has a schedule and I like to stick to it if possible.”

I watched her, waiting for the inevitable questions about why it was so important to go by and see Mom, but they never came. I was thankful for that because I wasn’t sure I had enough time to explain to her why Mom was in her fifties and living at an assisted living facility on a floor dedicated to Alzheimer’s patients.

“Maybe we can do breakfast tomorrow?” I asked.

She nodded, and I grinned. “Perfect.”

With one more quick kiss, I threw the covers off and rolled to the edge of the bed, my eyes searching the floor for my clothing. I quickly located my pants and underwear, pulling them on. My wallet and phone had fallen out of my pockets, so I snagged them as well and stuffed them in my pocket before turning to face Emma.

The air was sucked from my lungs as I looked at her. She still looked sleepy, so her eyes and face were soft. Her hair was wild around her head
