Chapter Sixteen
Whitney pulled up outside the large, red-brick Edwardian house, and slammed on the brakes. A third victim, Pamela Whitehouse, had been found in Woodford, a village on the outskirts of the city. Sheâd driven there with Matt immediately after getting the news. They walked up the circular drive to the front door where there stood a uniformed officer, and signed the log.
âWhereâs the body?â
âIn the bedroom,â the officer replied.
âWho found her?â
âThe son. Heâs inside with PC Timms.â
âMatt, go and find the son, and speak to him. Iâm going upstairs to the crime scene. Iâll be down shortly.â
Whitney reached the top of the stairs and was greeted by Claire pulling on her white coveralls. She smiled to herself as she caught a glimpse of the pathologistâs bright purple trousers and turquoise shirt. One day sheâd ask her where she shopped.
âGood morning, Claire.â
âI havenât got in there yet, so youâll have to stay here. Iâll call you when you can come in.â
âNo problem. Iâm assuming itâs the same scenario as the others?â she said.
âWe donât assume anything,â Claire said.
âOkay, letâs say itâs most likely, based on what weâve been told.â
âWhereâs your other half?â
âMattâs downstairs with the victimâs son.â
âI meant George.â
Whitney frowned. âSheâs not here. Why do you ask? Weâre not always together.â
âIs there something going on between you?â
âWhy?â What the heck was going on? Claire rarely spoke about anything personal.
âIt was obvious by the tension between the two of you when you came to the morgue the other day.â
âWe have some issues that weâre trying to sort out. Weâre getting there.â
âWhat issues?â Claire stared at her, hands on her hips.
âTiffany wants to drop out of university, to go travelling. She said sheâll go back to studying later on, but who knows. She went to see George instead of me to discuss it.â
âWhy wouldnât she speak to George, as she works at the university? Sheâs the perfect person to ask.â
Whitney pursed her lips. âDonât you start. Iâm the perfect person to ask as Iâm her mother. No one else. Weâve never had secrets in the past.â
âBut you canât be objective in the same way as George,â Claire said.
âIt doesnât need objectivity.â
âNow youâre being ridiculous.â Claire rolled her eyes.
âI donât wish to discuss this further. Everyone is ganging up on me. Tiffanyâs my daughter and she should have spoken to me first, and then we could have approached George together. End of story.â
âHow old are you?â Claire said, shaking her head. ââEveryoneâs ganging up on meâ. You sound like a teenager. Pull yourself together. Youâre a grown woman, with a responsible job, so I suggest you act like it.â
Whitneyâs fists clenched by her side. She could swing for Claire. What the hell did she know? She didnât have children. Then againâ¦
She dragged in a long, calming, breath.
Was Claire speaking the truth? Did she sound childish?
âMaybe youâre right. Itâs just as far as Tiffanyâs concerned, itâs hard for me to be objective,â she admitted.
âGlad you see it my way. Anyway, I canât stand here talking all day.
