If Terri had any pants, or really, anything else that she could use…that curtain was looking rather promising…she would have grabbed Trouble and taken their chances out in the blizzard. If he’d been willing to go with her. She’d tried, but he was being even more hardheaded than usual. And, the more intense her argument with Sin got, the more agitated he became.

When he’d started yowling, they agreed to a temporary cease-fire. Now, Sin was over there, with her cat, talking too softly for her to hear while she was left cooling her heels, and her backside, in front of the fire.

“Meow.” A ginger head tilted back and Trouble looked up at Sin.

“Are you certain?”

“Meow.”

Both heads and two sets of eyes turned and looked in her direction. It made Terri nervous.

“Meowww.”

“It’s okay. Drink your milk.”

To Terri’s consternation, her cat actually listened to this…this woman. He climbed onto the armrest of the chair and walked it to the end table. He bent his head and his tongue lapped at the saucer of milk.

“He never drinks milk at home.”

Trouble stopped drinking long enough to look at her and blink. Milk dripped from his chin and whiskers. “Meow.”

“Because you give him skim,” Sin said.

“That’s the same as what I drink.”

“He prefers whole.”

“Well, so do I, but it’s fattening.”

“A little wouldn’t harm you.” Sin’s eyes raked over her. “Room temperature is best. Cold tends to hurt his tummy.”

“Trouble, you suck.” Terri narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest as she glared at the traitorous cat.

“Fffftttt.”

“Shhh. It’s okay, Donder. She’s just angry.”

“Of course I am. It’s Christmas Eve. My cat was stolen. You’ve apparently renamed him and he clearly doesn’t want to come home. And, my jeans have been stolen by some…some fruitcake.”

“Why does no one appreciate my grandmother’s fruitcake? It was good enough to see us through the plague.” Sin stopped talking and looked as though she just realized she’d revealed something she shouldn’t have. “Anyway, your jeans and your cat will be returned. There’s no need to be mean.”

“Meow. Meow. Meowwww.”

Sin turned and gave a nod at the furball. “I know.” She turned back to Terri. “He’d also like you to know that he doesn’t like that name.”

“Huh. That’s tough. Because he’s Trouble, for obvious reasons.”

“He finds it embarrassing. He feels that he’s being punished for a lifetime for one little incident when he was a kitten.”

“He climbed down a sewer pipe and got his fat butt wedged in an U-joint. Who does that? Do you know how much it cost me to get CPS to dig out a one block section of piping to free you?” She gesticulated wildly at the cat.

“Mmmrrrrr?”

“A lot, that’s how much.” Terri stopped talking. She placed a hand to her face, closing her eyes, and pinching the bridge of her nose.

“Now you’ve got me doing it.” She opened her eyes and looked at Sin.

“Doing what?”

“Talking to him like he’s…”

“Real?”

“No. Not like he’s real. Like he can communicate with me.”

“He tries. Humans are tough.”

“Meow.”

“He said to tell you he never liked Jenni with an ‘i’.
