‘The poisonous little —!’ There was no doubt in my mind that Archie Bellairs was behind this. I clenched my fists and banged them on the desk. Not content with taking James into an opium den to do God knows what, he was now smearing his name! Obviously he must be Mr Endsleigh, and was trying to divert suspicion so that he wouldn’t have to support poor little Lucy, whoever’s child she was.

But then I remembered the description Katherine had given me of the mysterious ‘Mr Endsleigh’. He had a moustache, whereas Archie was clean-shaven. What else had been said? Dark-haired, tallish, charming, a gentleman. Ha, that could be James, I thought —

No, I whispered to myself. Then little Lucy, with her dark curls, came into my mind, sleeping so nicely in Nanny’s bed.

Albert found me at his desk, surrounded by papers, when he came home. ‘What are you doing in here, Connie?’ he said, laughing. ‘It’s only ten minutes till dinner —’ Then he saw my face. ‘What is it?’

‘I don’t want to believe it,’ I said, and my voice was hoarse from crying. ‘I won’t believe it!’
