Chapter Nineteen
"I DIDN'T EXPECT to see you here today." Rafe leaned against the door frame at the entrance of my former office.
"I didn't expect to be here, believe me." I pointed to the computer sleeping on the desk. "I waited 'til the end of the day last Friday, but no one came to check this out and complete my separation paperwork."
Rafe shook her head. "The bureaucracy can drive you nuts, can't it?"
"Yes, it can." I resented driving all the way into the city just to sit on my hands and wait for someone wearing a clipboard and a bored expression to come into the office, power up the computer, sign a paper, and hand me a copy of it.
"And you had to spend your first morning of freedom back here?" Rafe's frown expressed enough disgust for both of us.
"That's right."
"I bet you'll run out of here the minute they check this equipment."
"Well, not exactly. Conrad asked me to meet with Mary Campbell and Stuart Rosensweig. Each one's been given half of my caseload, and one of them will take my probies."
"Am I getting him or her?"
"Neither one. You'll be on your own for the foreseeable future."
Rafe pushed herself away from the door frame and stood perfectly erect.
"What happened to my year of probation?"
"Conrad had a chance to watch you in action. He knows you're more competent than most of the supervising P.O's. And, he's short on supervisors."
"I'm not more competent than you," she said.
"Thanks, but don't sell yourself short."
Rafe walked over to an empty box sitting in the middle of the floor. A used soft drink cup with a trio of dark-brown rivulets congealed on one side shared space atop the box with the office phone. Rafe shook her head.
"I guess it was too much trouble for the cleaning staff to put this back on the desk where it belongs." She leaned down, pushed the phone to one side, and raised her leg high enough to prop one foot on the box.
"Someone probably made a call or two while they sipped their soda. It's still plugged into the outlet," I said.
"Did you have anything to do with Conrad's not reassigning me to a supervisor?"
Her question startled me. Usually candid to a fault, I teetered between not answering and shrouding the facts in doublespeak.
"Everybody's up to here with work." I raised my hand as high above my head as I could. "Having one less probie to supervise is for the good of the unit."
"Right." Rafe rolled her eyes.
"You can take my word for it." I did my best to keep my face expressionless.
"I'd rather take you out for a drink and dinner now that you've left this place."
Rafe's words caught me off guard. She didn't ask if we could see each other. She made a declaration.
"Do you think that's a good idea? My foot's barely out the door."
"And it's a lovely one at that." Rafe looked down at my ankles and then back up to my eyes. "But frankly, Alana, I'm interested in more than your foot.
