Zinnia

The dentist wrapped a band of metal around my front tooth

when I fell and broke a corner.

It stuck out anyway—

is why it broke—

too many teeth in my mouth

or the mouth too small to hold the normal number of teeth.

Zinnias were my mother’s flowers—

sturdy—

the hollyhocks from the farm would fall over in the wind

or else they had to be staked.

The petunias wilted in the heat.

It was a working flower—the zinnia.

As I would be a worker to get work done.

I felt their petals rise from my head.

My mother grieved at my ugliness.

I knew others would look away.

They would tell me stories not true

the days before caps and replacements

when roads were washboard

and laundry stood straight out on the line.
