CHAPTER SEVEN

THE next twenty-four hours passed in a blur for Luke.

The call from Brady’s commanding officer hadn’t divulged much information, only that his brother’s plane had crashed during a mission. Brady had to eject from his F-16, but not without injuries. It was touch-and-go for a while, but Brady had survived twenty-four hours before he’d been located, then he’d been taken to Ramstein Base in Germany, then to the second army hospital at Landstuhl. Although he was still critical he was flown home to the States.

It had been Tess who’d taken over and made the necessary calls. The first one to Chance. An hour later Chance and Cade had picked him up and driven him to the airport, but instead of dropping him off, they’d boarded the plane with him.

Luke wasn’t used to having this kind of support. He’d been on his own most of his life, but there hadn’t been any doubt that both cousins were accompanying him to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Once they arrived at the hospital, Chance talked with the nurse on duty at the desk. It seemed to take forever, but Luke needed time to gather his thoughts and his emotions.

He might not have liked that Brady had been the son who had a life with their father, but he’d never wanted anything bad to happen to him. And this could be bad. No matter the circumstances, Brady was his brother.

Suddenly that mattered to him.

His cousins walked back to the waiting area. “The nurse is going to get the doctor on the case.”

Luke sat down as his thoughts turned to Tess and how she’d been there for him. She’d made him call back Brady’s commanding officer to get more information. When Luke was reluctant to make the trip, Tess told him he couldn’t ignore the fact he had a brother. And if he didn’t go to see Brady, he’d be sorry.

Luke took a breath and released it. Just months ago his life was less complicated—no family, no financial problems. No Tess. His life had been pretty lonely. He felt a strange tightening in his gut. Not anymore.

Chance and Cade stood as the doctor approached. “Mr. Randell?”

“I’m Luke Randell,” he said. “These men are my cousins, Chance and Cade Randell.

“I’m Dr. Newberry.” They all shook hands. “I’m handling Captain Brady’s case. I’m sure your brother will be happy his family is here.”

Luke had to ask the dreaded question, “How is my brother, Doctor?”

“He had several injuries, including some internal bleeding, but the surgeons at Landstuhl Hospital got it under control. Also, after he ejected from his plane his leg was shattered on the landing. That, combined with Captain Randell having been exposed to the elements overnight before he was rescued, made his condition more serious.”

“How is he now?”

“He’s been upgraded to stable. He’s still heavily sedated. The surgeons operated on his leg this morning, but that’s only the beginning of his recovery. There could be more surgeries, and a lot of therapy to bring his leg back to normal.
