How to Learn Common Idioms and Slang Phrases
The next question is how to actually learn idioms and slang phrases. These arenât things you will find in textbooks and recordings, and they are things you will need to pick up by immersing yourself in English as much as you can.
Watching English films will allow you to learn many idioms, so it may be a good idea to use subtitles to allow you to pick up on context and understand when a phrase doesnât fit in with meaning. In this case, you're likely dealing with an idiom. A good rule of thumb is to use subtitles in English whilst listening to the words. Whilst it might take your attention away from what is happening in the film, you will be able to match written words up to the sounds, therefore giving you a shadowing exercise without actually realizing it.
Listening to English speakers will also allow you to pick up idioms and slang phrases, and if you donât understand something, simply ask and most people will be happy to explain what the phrase means. This is a great way of learning.
For those who find it difficult to immerse themselves completely in the English language, e.g. they do not have any native English speakers around them, it really comes down to watching TV programs. Thankfully, the Internet has allowed us to watch any program, no matter where we are in the world, and this is a blessing in terms of learning to recognize and understand specific idioms and slang phrases, in your journey towards English fluency.
To help you get started with learning the most common idioms and slang phrases, below you will find a list to focus on. Remember, this is by no means an exhaustive list, and new idioms and slang phrases appear all the time. These will allow you to understand how idioms work and will give you a starting vocabulary of slang phrases in the English language generally.
