Chapter 18

While he waited for the assembly, Captain Gary Adams fumed inside.

Setting up the convoy mission had created significant tension between himself and some of the leaders in the community. It was too risky, they had said. He didn’t have the best interests of the community in mind. The safety of its members. People would die out there, and what was the point of every attack if fewer of them survived to benefit from it? Diminishing returns.

They had enough supplies for another year or more, which meant they could ease off the ambushes for a while and let the cities trade peacefully for a while. The elites would let their guard down again. And he and his fighters could launch another attack later on, when the cities became compliant again. He had argued that the cities, especially Springfield and Cheyenne, would have too much time to multiply their drone fleets, making future attacks more dangerous. They had negotiated for hours, and ultimately Adams had conceded to this one last assault.

He fumed because he only had their best interests at heart. So he had planned everything to ensure as few casualties as possible. The cyanide traps. The drone targeting attachments. Ensuring everyone, even the non-combatants and trainees, had more than enough equipment. He put Armida in charge, as she was the most experienced at winging it if objectives went awry.

And ultimately, it all had gone according to plan—until the trailing drones had arrived, splitting his team apart. One truck abandoned, two trucks returned with all the people and equipment they could shove onto them. The ones who remained in the town knew how to survive—the shelters had been part of the plan, too. The next night, the trucks returned to the town, rescued their abandoned comrades, and soon everyone was home. Even the few who had not survived.

Everyone but Mira.

Armida briefed him on the strange incident with the puma and the hunter, and later the feral dogs. There had been nothing at all that they could do for Mira.

It was difficult to erase the memory of Cho-Cho Shane’s despair when the final truck returned, and when he heard of Mira’s fate. In all the despondency for the loss of a few people, Adams wished he could purge that one image. Shane was a good man, soft but strong, and after his wife had abandoned him and his daughters, he had become more focused on building better technology and making improvements in the community in order to hide his grief. But the news of Mira’s capture nearly killed him in front of Adam’s and everyone’s eyes.

But this—this situation would really put him in a bad place with the leaders.

With two fingers, Adams rubbed the pointed beard that covered his chin. He needed to hide his emotions, and the beard was not enough of a mask.

Amanda Barnes entered, her grace always pulling attention toward herself. The white streak in her hair had only come about in the past six months. Community leadership was stressful, but it was times like this that people aged faster than they should.
