Panic rose in my heart the minute I rounded the corner to Del’s shop. I hadn’t even opened the door yet, and I could already see Angel in the back, bending over to pick up a box. I flung the door open and rushed in, quickly taking the box from her arms.

“What are you doing?” I snapped. “You shouldn’t be lifting this.”

Angel’s brow furrowed for a moment. She stared back at me with a fire in her eyes. “It’s not that heavy. Anyway, what are you doing here? I’m working, and this is part of work.”

“Something wrong?” Del popped in from the back room. She put a hand on her hip, looking back and forth between us, quickly registering the anger on Angel’s face.

“Don’t you think you could do the heavy lifting around here while Angel is pregnant?” I asked.

“Oh, sorry.” She shrugged. “Those are just new accessories. It’s not that heavy. But sure. Just ask me next time, Angel. Okay?”

She breezed off to do other things, leaving Angel and me alone. Angel was even more pissed than she had been moments ago.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to barge in on you like this,” I explained. “I just got worried when I saw you.”

She tightly gripped my arm and pulled me into a more private corner of the store. “Look, I get you’re worried and all, but I’m being cautious. I’m not some fragile little thing that’s going to break, okay?”

“I’m just worried about you. I wish you’d quit working while you’re pregnant. I know it wasn’t in the contract, but I can give you money to live off of until it’s time for the restaurant to open.”

“And then what am I supposed to do?” she fumed. “Just sit around, twiddling my thumbs for the next nine months? No way. I want to stay busy, and the doctor said I was perfectly fine to continue most of my normal activities.”

“You know, most women would kill for an offer like that,” I grumbled.

“Well, I’m not most women,” she barked.

We were in a standoff, and I could feel the heat rising in my body. Mixed in with all the frustration was pure lust. She blew away a few curly strands of hair that had fallen around her face, and I could see she had no intention of backing down. It made me want to pin her against the wall and take out everything on her body.

“I can see that,” I replied after a moment.

“Can you also see that you’re interrupting me while I’m at work? How would you like it if I bursted in on you at the office and started bossing you around?”

I threw my hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay. Let’s just take a step back here.”

“You should step right back out the door.” She swirled her finger around to the front of the store. “I’ll talk to you when I get off.”

I spun on my heels and started for the door. “Jeez, those pregnancy hormones must be kicking in,” I grumbled.
