Chapter Twelve

She'd woken naked and tucked into her bed with no recollection of how she'd gotten there. When she'd turned onto her side, a deep ache pulsed from between her legs, pulling her instantly awake and making the memory of the night before crystal clear. Even now as Mila filed paperwork at the nurse's desk, the tenderness lingered. He'd bruised her with his hips, his fingers, his kiss, and it was a sweet ache that she carried like a secret, one that was proving to be ridiculously hard to keep.

Isaac had been in surgery when she'd signed in for her volunteer shift, yet even knowing he'd be gone for hours didn't keep her from continually glancing at the double doors that led into the unit, waiting for him to walk in. The bits of anxiety and doubt refused to go away, and Mila realized she just needed his reassurance, a smile or that amazing sparkle in his eyes, to know that last night hadn't been a mistake.

They'd agreed to act as they always had around each other so as not to draw suspicion. But when the double doors finally opened and Isaac walked in, sliding his green surgical cap off as he searched her out, Mila realized they were going to have a problem. She didn't care if anyone saw them staring. He gave a quick wink—all the reassurance she could have asked for.

A woman from PowerPlay came through the doors a moment later, holding a wiggling Moustache. Isaac half-turned to speak with her, taking the puppy into his arms. He stroked the dog's head with tenderness that displayed the man he was. Kind, thoughtful, caring. Behind those soft corners were harder edges that he'd only let her glimpse. Isaac was holding back his own polar opposite—the edgy part of himself that wanted to not be kind, caring and thoughtful. It was equally thrilling and intimidating to imagine him taking complete command of her body. She'd never wanted a man to have control of her; yet, under Isaac's hands, surrender and supplication were exactly what she wanted.

"If he kisses that puppy, I'm going to have an orgasm."

Lydia Frank's voice made Mila snap to attention. She lowered her gaze, aware of how intently she'd been staring at Isaac. The nurse put one elbow on the filing cabinet and cocked her head. "He's too damn perfect. Oh… oh… he's going to…"

Mila followed Lydia’s gaze back to Isaac.

"Ahhhh, there it is." She sighed as he pressed his lips to the top of Moustache's head. "There's not a woman in this place who wouldn't trade places with that mutt. Know what I mean?" Lydia side-eyed Mila before giving her a blatant once-over.

Mila supposed it would be bad if she laughed, so she only shrugged. Heat spread across her face, fast and surprising. Oh hell, she was blushing. As if she could scrub it off, Mila wiped a hand along her cheek, but it was too late.

Lydia's perfect brows arched up, and her smirk grew. "Yeah, well, keep dreaming, sweetheart.
