Chapter 14
Chase straightened his tie in his bathroom mirror. He was happy about being back in New York, but he wasnât sure why he agreed to go on two dates so close together. It had only been a week since his date with Jessica. The majority of the women who were interested in him in the past seemed to only want him for his money. He had fended off women who just saw him for his bank account more times than he cared to admit and he learned to guard his heart.
There had been one woman a friend set him up with three years ago who had sworn she was his soulmate. It still made Chase cringe when he remembered the way she continually insisted that he not only take her out to the fanciest restaurants in New York but that she also always conveniently ran into at least three of her friends while they were out together. Luckily, it only took a month for the womanâs venomous personality to rear its ugly head.
After that, Chase had been more selective about who he spent time with. His selection process had slowly whittled down from private background checks all the way to only dating women that came highly recommended from close friends and family. Sadly, the only person whose opinions he trusted in those matters was his mother. Chase knew she was just as picky about the type of woman he dated as Chase was himself. Thatâs why he had always agreed to at least one date with any woman his mother asked him to consider. However, after several bad first dates set up by his mother, Chaseâs faith in her ability to be his matchmaker was greatly shaken.
The last woman his mother had asked him to date ended terribly. Unbeknownst to Chaseâs mother, the woman had been extremely judgemental. It had made Chase cringe to hear the way the woman spoke down to his driver and the staff at the restaurant they went to. To his horror, the woman managed to make superficial comments about every person they ran into that night. She seemed ready with pre-planned put-downs for any person within a five-mile radius. No one was safe. At one point, the woman even dared to criticize Chaseâs tailor for substandard top stitching, whatever that even meant. The date was terrible enough that Chase had seriously considered revoking his motherâs matchmaking privileges. When heâd informed his mother of his doubts, she had insisted that he give her one last shot to find his perfect match.
âI know the perfect girl for you,â Miriam had insisted. âYou have to give her a shot, Chase. Sheâs perfect for you. Sheâs just the woman to pull you out of your shell.â
Chase winced. His mother was convinced that Chase needed to date someone who was his polar opposite in personality. âI donât think I need to go out with another wild-child, Mom.â
âNot a wild-child, dear! Just a girl who can add some spice to your life.
