Chapter 28

I was online Googling the various names I’d copied from Maddie’s list last night when I heard her enter the bathroom. Morton arrived in the kitchen a couple minutes later. He stretched once he entered and then came over for his head scratch. I let him outside and filled his food and water dishes. He was scratching at the backdoor a minute later.

My Googling effort was a complete waste of time. I went through all three pages of names in about fifteen minutes and came up with nothing specific. The names Oliver and Jake were on the list but not anywhere close to Tubby’s at the bottom of the second page. The names Louie and Mike were also listed, but I highly doubted that meant my officemate, Louie Laufen, or Mike, the bartender at The Spot.

I mixed up a bowl of pancake batter and was just finished when I heard Maddie coming down the stairs. I filled a Nina’s mug with coffee for her and handed it over when she entered the kitchen.

“Oh, perfect, thank you,” she said, taking the mug from me.

“Grab a seat. I mixed up some pancake batter, and I’ll make us breakfast whenever you’re ready. No rush.”

She sat down on a kitchen stool and took a sip of coffee. “Mmm-mmm, perfect.”

“Do you need to go anywhere today?”

“Why do you ask?” she said and sipped more coffee.

“Just mentally planning my day. Unless something changes, I’ll be down at my office all day.” I didn’t mention I was going to go over her notes again and see if something, somewhere, might click regarding Colton Ferral and his mother.

“No, I don’t have to be anywhere. I plan on being the most boring woman in town.”

“Yeah, and the safest. We don’t need the wrong person seeing you or running into someone who’s a friend of your folks or your sisters.”

“True. You ready to cook up those pancakes?” she asked, changing the subject.

I didn’t press her. We ate breakfast, and Maddie insisted on cleaning the kitchen since I did the cooking. I left Morton at home, got a peck on the cheek, and headed to the office.

Louie wasn’t there, but the coffee was on. I filled my mug and spread out the copies of Maddie’s notes. There were six pages, three of which were the laundry list of names. I pushed those off to the side and worked through the notes. I deciphered abbreviations, guessed at various symbols, and at no surprise came up empty-handed. I left a note for Louie telling him I would be back later and drove over to the Ferral’s mansion on Summit Avenue. I parked on the side street at the corner of the alley and waited, hoping I would see a car back out of the triple garage.

I nearly froze to death before Ferral’s garage door eventually went up, and a burgundy-colored SUV backed out of the garage and headed toward me. I picked up on the Mercedes logo centered on the grill. I could make out two individuals in the front seats but couldn’t tell if anyone was in the backseat.
