Casey opened the door and was met with the moon-glow cheeks, paper cut mouth, and hard mineral eyes of Miss Brock.

“Miss Brock! Hello.”

“Good morning, Casey.” Behind her stood a young woman posed next to a plastic-encased rack of bridal dresses. “Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials,” she said, efficiently.

“Thank you. What is all of this?”

“Samuel wanted me to help you select a dress and to be a witness at your ceremony.” She barely managed a smile.

Casey stood aside as the two passed into the foyer. “Did he? Glad he told me. Oh wait, he didn’t.”

“Let’s set these up in the blue spare room, there’s a full length mirror in there,” Miss Brock said to the young woman. The two hoisted the rack and ascended the stairs.

Casey made a beeline for the sitting room, where Mr. Foster was lounging, sipping at a mug of coffee, his laptop on his thighs.

“Was that Miss Brock?” he asked, not looking at her.

“Yes. I wish you’d mentioned this.”

His eyes flicked up to hers. “I’m sorry, is there a problem? I thought we had agreed—”

“We did, but you know very well she’s never liked me. And she’s never liked the idea of us getting together.”

“This was actually her idea. You really shouldn’t take her personally. She just has an aloof personality, that’s all.”

“That’s fine, but I didn’t know I’d be picking out dresses with her. I think my own mother would have liked to do this.” She didn’t want to argue with him again, but she was growing weary of him calling all of the shots.

“I thought you said they couldn’t come up and we’d go see them after the wedding,” he said.

Of course, he was right. During her conversation with her mother, Casey had learned her father had been suffering from a large sebaceous cyst on his tailbone and was scheduled to have it drained. He’d need weeks to recover and couldn’t currently travel. To have her parents at the ceremony, it would have to take place inside of Casey’s childhood home, which she didn’t want to do. A big wedding wasn’t necessary, but that didn’t mean she wanted it to happen on the green (green!) decades-old carpet in her parents’ living room. Besides, given their phone conversation, Casey didn’t want to risk that her mother would stand with a sourpuss look while she and Mr. Foster exchanged vows.

The suspense of his last migraine had rattled her to the point where she’d agreed to a ceremony as soon as possible. Even so, trying on wedding gowns with Miss Brock, of all people, wasn’t enticing.

But she had to face it. Miss Brock was a mother figure to her fiancé, an important person in his life. Learning to deal with in-laws (even if Miss Brock wasn’t technically such) was a big part of being married. In fact, Mr. Foster would have to win over Casey’s pessimistic mother, and she would appreciate his effort.

Considering Miss Brock had a daughter with autism, Casey wondered if she’d misread her demeanor this entire time, mistaking distraction for chilliness.
