FINALIST—COLUMNS AND COMMENTARY
In these three columns for The Atlantic, Caitlin Flanagan explores the intersection of gender and power in modern-day America, at least in part by recalling the easily (by some) forgotten world of pre-#MeToo America and her own experience of it. Why, asked Donald J. Trump after he appointed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, didn’t Kavanaugh’s accuser tell anyone that he assaulted her when they were students in high school? Because, writes Flanagan, “Christine Blasey Ford was not a fifteen-year-old girl in the present; she was a fifteen-year-old girl in the past.” Flanagan is one of the most honored writers in the history of the National Magazine Awards. Her work for The Atlantic has received seven nominations: in Feature Writing in 2018, Essays in 2005, and Reviews and Criticism in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008, when she won the award in the category.
