As discussed in Chapter 6, possibly the coolest medical potential use for AI is the brain-computer interface (BCI). We already discussed its impact on work in the future. What about in medicine? Well, let’s say that you have the nanobots in your body, and they detect an anomaly in a cell. The nanobot reaches out to a cancer database to check for matches through your BCI. The results come back that the anomaly is not cancer. Whew! If it did match something in the cancer database, the nanobot would alert your doctor through the BCI, while your home AI automatically makes an appointment for you for further evaluation and treatment. In this example, the very early detection and treatment of a problem has the potential to save millions of lives. With that in mind, would you get a BCI? What if your BCI, knowing what you are about to eat, had your home AI tell you that it’s better to have a more nutritious alternative snack that would help a deficiency in your body at the moment, say of a particular vitamin. Would that entice you to get a BCI? Many people are understandably nervous about such a foreign device being put into their body. But like many other things, the next generation would not have that reluctance, and doing it would become widespread.
