USING REIKI

chapter ten

SELF-HEALING AND SELF-TREATING

Self-healing is a lifelong process of taking responsibility for your own health and well-being by treating yourself—and particularly your body—with love and respect. It also means making the most of your personal potential by taking a holistic view of yourself and trying to live in the best way possible for you. This means developing an awareness of your whole self, so to take a holistic view, self-healing is to do with health in any area of our lives—physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and even environmental.

SELF-HEALING WITH REIKI

Self-healing is one of the most important aspects of Reiki at all levels, and is certainly the major focus of Reiki at First Degree. It is an act of self-love to give yourself a Reiki treatment every day, to give yourself that priority, to find the time to just “be” with yourself, and because Reiki works holistically, it will also support any other aspects of your self-healing program. However, doing a self-treatment is only part of the story. Reiki works holistically, and your use of it helps healing to take place in each of the four bodies—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual—for the rest of your life. After you have been using Reiki for some months you will probably start to be aware that other healing effects are beginning to happen.

Physical

You are likely to become much more aware of your physical body and what it needs, and it is important to listen to your body’s messages and to actively follow up on what you have learned, making the necessary changes to the way you think and act in relation to your physical health. How do you use your physical body in terms of exercise, awareness and touch? What is the importance to you of food and drink, sex, being outdoors, being in the countryside and being connected with the elements (air, water, fire and earth)?

What is your body image? Do you like your body? You need to work on clearing out any negative self-beliefs, such as thinking you are too fat, too thin, too tall or too short. Start accepting and loving your body, appreciating it for the fine job it does, praising it instead of complaining about it, and giving it the priority in your life that it deserves.

A number of therapies have stimulating yet relaxing effects on the body, and could become part of your self-healing program alongside Reiki. These include aromatherapy, massage, reflexology and shiatsu, and gentle exercises such as tai chi and yoga.

Emotional

You will begin to discover more about your emotional body, which reacts to every emotion you experience, so it makes sense to work on releasing negative feelings such as anger, jealousy, resentment or guilt, and replacing them with positive ones such as love, compassion, freedom and happiness (you could use the visualization here to help with this). Try to spend as little time as possible in negative situations or with negative people, and work at improving all your relationships, from partner and family, to friends and colleagues.
