As well as seafood, the oceans yield many other useful products, including precious pearls and minerals such as manganese, which covers some parts of the seabed. The oceans also provide energy. For example, oil and natural gas can be mined from the seabed, and the power of waves and tides can be harnessed to produce electricity. Seawater can even provide fresh drinking water if the salt is removed through a process called desalination, but this is expensive.
