THE THREATENED FIGHT NEVER OCCURRED, and I was stuffed when we left the restaurant.

“I might need to sit down,” I grumbled as Jack slipped his arm around my back. “Why did you make me eat those wings? And by the way, I don’t know what crack Bernard is smoking, but poutine is not the greatest thing ever invented.”

Jack snickered.

“I heard it the second I said it,” I admonished. “There’s no need to comment.”

“I didn’t say a word.” He cast me an adoring smile as we turned down Essex. The location for the seance was four blocks down the road but we had twenty minutes to get there, so there was no reason to hurry. “How did you like your scallops and squash?”

“I wish I knew what kind of squash it was. It was really good.”

“I’m betting they get all kinds of squash here. It goes with the witch and pilgrim and Native American heritage,” he noted. “From what I saw, it looked a little fancy. I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“I did.”

“That means we’re not fighting, right?”

I took pity on him, but only because he would’ve done the same for me if I had stuck my foot in my mouth. “You’re safe.”

“That’s good, because I don’t want to go into a seance mid-fight.”

“You’re really worked up about this seance.”

“I’m worried that it’s going to go sideways,” he said. “If you sense something bad is going to happen, I want you to run out the door. We’ll blame it on all the food we ate.”

“I’ve got it, Jack.” His constant worrying often tired me. “I have everything under control. In fact ... .” A hint of movement above — it was the shadow on the sidewalk that drew my attention — had me raising my eyes to the rooftop to our right. The sun blurred my vision, but when I shielded my eyes I found a woman staring down at us.

At first, I didn’t register what I saw. Then, slowly, her image started to sharpen and I realized it was the woman from the wax museum. I held her gaze for what felt like a really long time, my throat dry, and then I found my voice.

“Jack.”

“I said I would be good at the seance,” he groused. “You don’t need to lecture me. I’ll be on my best behavior.”

I turned to him, desperate. “Jack.”

He must’ve read something in my tone because his eyes filled with concern. “What, baby?”

“The roof. Look on the roof.”

He looked up, scanning, but his gaze never landed on the spot where she stood. I wondered if only I could see her, but when I looked again she was gone.

“Where?” Jack asked. He looked ready for a fight. “What did you see?”

“The woman from the museum.”

He anchored me tighter at his side. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah. It was definitely her.”

“Do you want to go look for her? I can make up an excuse about you being sick to get out of the seance.”

It was an option, but inherently I knew we wouldn’t find her.
