Chapter 31
Clayton was staring at the computer and thinking about Claireâs surprise visit when Fisher hurried through the CID suite like an eagle fixing on his prey. Clayton watched the super hold an urgent conversation with Hewett. A phone call was made. Had they arrested Mel? How would he tell his father? It would kill him.
Oh well, Iâll find out soon enough, he thought, and turned back to his work. He was due to brief Bligh on the progress of the Kowalczyk case. He wondered how the techies were getting on in their attempt to crack the E4E phones and other electronic devices.
He got up and wandered past Hewett, who was talking animatedly to a DS on the team. The officer was nodding.
At the door, Clayton paused and turned to a colleague standing on the edge of the group. âWhatâs happened? Lambton case?â
âWe donât know yet. A serious injury in Walberswick. Might be related to the case, but weâre not sure. Everettâs gone to the hospital in Yarmouth.â
âThanks.â Not what heâd expected. He found heâd actually hoped that Mel had been caught. He took the stairs to the floor below and went along the corridor, checking offices until he found Kevin Fuller. Fuller was hunched over what looked like a small tablet, resting on a cradle and plugged into a smartphone. Four or five other phones were spread across the technicianâs desk.
âIs that our case there, Kev?â Clayton asked. The young man turned around and smiled. His eyes were enormous behind the thick lenses in his glasses.
âSure is.â
âWhat have you got for us?â
âItâll take a bit longer to get the full readout for you, but thanks to this little beaut weâve got text messages, emails and photos.â
Clayton was impressed. âI thought youâd still be struggling to break the password.â
Kevin raised a finger. âAh, this bypasses the passcodes and goes straight to the heart of the matter.â
âOne giant leap for Anglian, eh? Is this the stuff we got from the Israelis?â Clayton had heard about these data-extraction devices but hadnât realised they were using them in his own nick.
âThat would be telling, wouldnât it?â
âOK. Well, can you tell me how much longer youâre going to keep us waiting?â
Kevin tilted his head. âYouâll have it after the weekend. That alright?â
âI guess itâll have to be,â Clayton said. Heâd just remembered that tomorrow was Saturday. It was cold enough for snow. So much for my run along the coast, he thought.
He returned to his desk and looked across at Neil. His colleague was talking on the phone. What was he doing? Checking out Banaczak? Could he be trusted? Clayton swivelled round his chair and surveyed his other workmates. What about Hewett? How on earth was he supposed to find out who was the corrupt one in this place? Still seated, Clayton kicked the wastepaper basket.
His mind returned to Claire. Heâd acted nonchalant, as though she were a regular visitor. In fact, he hadnât seen her in months.
He let her in. She looked pretty in that red coat.
