Heather

Calluna vulgaris

(Russian: Вереск обыкновенный)

Indication: for the talkative self-absorbed people who fear loneliness.

CALLUNA VULGARIS. Ling. Scotch Heather.

Plant: shrubby and much branched, grows to about two feet high. The stems are rough and wiry and the branches are covered with very short soft hairs.

Leaves: these are small and opposite, and are arranged in four densely packed rows along the branches.

Flowers: mauve-pink in colour, occasionally white, are arranged in leafy spikes (racemes). The corolla is deeply four-lobed and concealed by the longer calyx.

There are eight stamens and a long pistil which protrudes beyond the calyx. The calyx consists of four sepals, mauve-pink like the corolla, dry and rough. Below it there are four small triangular bracts fringed with soft hairs and a short flower stem.

Blooms: from July to September on heaths, dry moors, and open barren places. It should not be confused with the pinky-red Bell Heather (Erica cinerea).

Prepare: by the sun method. Gather the freshly flowering sprays and leaves, above any dead or faded flowers from plants round the circumference and the centre of the heather patch, and place quickly on the surface of the water in the bowl.
