A godkin in a shriven cupboard, Lares-

Palmable and orderly, presiding

Over the hierarchies of the silverware,

Our platters’ strata and our serving spoons;

A small mild god, ignorant of thunder,

Attuned to nothing more sombre than the trills

When all our crockery trembles to the fault

Of obscure, dimly rumorous calamities.

What the Snow Was Not

The snow was not liver-spotted like a gambler’s

Hands. It did not reflect

Violet abrasions at the hubs of wheels

Or the well-glossed ankles of policemen.
