An Open Letter to Petra Kvitová

Many forms the shape of a warrior takes, and you are one, and one for sure, although the stadium lights throw four shadows to the floor, there is only one you, as you launch into serve, as you fire those rockets, those little sparks of belief. The greater inferno remains undimmed, and ever has – at least to the public eye. The shadows again, where X sometimes marks the spot, this time there is no doubt.
Behind the scenes, the struggle and heartbreak, the long path back to the mountaintop you so nearly once reached. The journey filled with landscapes to admire, with moments to savour, with lessons to learn, about the self and the wider world, about the spirit of those close to you.
You, who came through a hell of sorts, defying diagnoses and working harder than ever, surpassing fear and pain, undeniably becoming something and someone far larger than the sum of your parts.
You overcame adversity, fought through the cracks of possibility, a re-birth, a surge of euphoria, of passion, inflamed, those screams are everything of you, in sound manifest. They are love and support, they are effort and faith.
You are a figure, to praise in your lofty flight, for children to take grand fortune from watching, a true contender for the pedestal of ‘role model for youth’, and for men and women to not be beaten, broken, defeated, by the many and somewhat disturbing challenges of life. A life that throws and whispers, forces and offers its secrets, its very soul to us.
In an age in which we are bombarded with fake celebrities and a tide of technology sweeps us all up, a genuine and valuable sporting hero, a heroine indeed, emerges from the flames of circumstance, to provide us with just what we need – both a tonic for the times, and an icon to truly look up to.
Your recent success, several triumphs of note, are a tribute to this past year or so of fighting, falling and getting back up each time a little stronger. You deserve every moment of joy, every ball that you strike. With love.
With love
