Study: His studies demonstrate plants react to the death of other living cells. He first learned this upon cutting his finger and noticing the reaction of the plants to the destruction of the cells. He saw the same reaction again with his plants that he attributed to the death of live bacteria in yogurt when he mixed the yogurt with ingredients killing the live cultures. Backster then deliberately killed brine shrimp by boiling them in water and got a strong reaction from his plants. He demonstrated the same phenomenon with other types of living cells, yeast, mold cultures, blood and sperm among them, determining they — like plants — would also react to the death of fellow living cells.
