“You did what?”
“I walked out on him,” I tell my best friend, Suzy, as we share a beer in my local tavern.
“You're crazy.”
“What is it with everyone telling me what I should have done or how I should be? I made a choice and that is that.”
She leans forward. “Chill out, babes. I’m not telling you what you should have done.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“I just want the best for you.”
“This is the best for me. I don’t need a man. And I don’t need yours, or anyone else’s, sympathy…okay?”
She leans back in her chair and takes a sip of her beer. “Okay. Let’s drop it.”
I study her for a moment and see that I’ve hurt her. “I’m sorry, Suzy. God, I’m just so stressed out.”
“It’s alright. You're a bitch at the best of times.” She smirks. “Guess that’s what I love about you.”
I smile back and take a drink.
“It’s not too late, though,” she says.
“I can’t see him again. Not in that way.”
“Why not?” She jerks her chin to my phone, which rests next to my beer glass. “He’s text you, what, three times already?”
“Yeah.”
“Then it’s not too late. He’s eager. You should count yourself lucky.”
“What, that a chubby girl from a small town can get it on with Mr. Hottie from the city?”
“I would have said curvy girl.”
I snort. “You're so full of shit.”
“And you're full of self-loathing. It’s boring.” She sighs. “Don’t be a pussy, just text him back.”
“I can’t. I spoke to him really badly.”
“Then make it up to him.” She winks. “I’m sure you’ll have fun doing it.”
“My interview is on Monday, though.”
“So?”
“I have so much to do.”
“I’m sure one night with a hunky life drawing teacher can inspire your creativity.”
I pause and then smile.
She pushes forward. “That’s better. A real smile at last. You've been such a grouch lately.”
I sit up straight, breathe out, and then pick up my phone. “Okay. If only to get you off my back, I’ll text him.”
“Good. And I want to know all the gory details in the morning.”
“I’m going there to finish my portfolio.”
“Yeah, and the rest.”
I blush.
“What about you?” I ask after having another sip of beer.
“What about me?”
“I can’t just leave you here. We’ve only started drinking.”
She nods to some sexy guy at the bar. He seems to be taking a very healthy interest in her. When I look back at her I grin. “You're shameful.”
“Yeah, and I’m young and horny…like you. Now get! I’ll be more than fine on my own.”
