Next to it was a tree with the moss spread all over the trunk. Then there was a tree with no moss at all. The trees couldn’t agree!

Joe must have made a frustrated noise. Bear smiled at him.

“Are you okay, buddy?”

Joe gritted his teeth and explained. Bear nodded, understanding.

“Well, it’s like the prevailing wind. Moss is mostly on the north side, but it isn’t always one hundred per cent like that. Here’s another one you can try.”

A tree had toppled over. Bear pointed at the rings inside the trunk. They started in the middle and then grew larger as you got nearer the outside of the tree.

“A tree gets a new ring each year it’s alive, during the growth season. But can you see here – the rings are slightly thicker on this side? That’s because this side got more sun. So, that way is south. Of course, you need to find a fallen tree to see that one.”

Bear stood up and held up his hands, with his fingers spread.

“So, you see, you can have lots of little clues. Moss. Rings. Wind. Plants. Sastrugi. They’re all pieces in a jigsaw.”

Then Bear clasped his hands so that his fingers were all linked.

“If you put them all together, Nature gives you the big picture, and that’s the one to look at.”

Soon after that, they were walking along a bank where the snow had piled up. Bear sunk his stick into the snow by a good metre, and looked pleased.

“This is just what we need for our midday break.”

“What, snow?” Joe asked in surprise. “Won’t it be cold?”

Bear smiled. “You’ll see!”
