10: A World of Eternal Slumber

Cary’s eyes gradually opened to see the unfortunately familiar ceiling of the scout craft above her throbbing head. Various parts of her body felt numb. Couldn’t she just stay here, not having to move? Her desire to remain motionless was unimaginably strong. Nevertheless the Venezuelan girl’s head still crept into view, a trickle of blood oozing across her concerned expression. It was unfortunate timing that this sight coincided with her brain finally making sense of the putrid smell her nose had been picking up since just before she’d regained consciousness, desperately making her want to gag. Groggily Cary sat herself upright, wishing her body would let her move with more expedience, causing Eve to shuffle backwards into the side of a chair to get out of her way.

“Where are we?” was what Eve thought Cary said, but her voice was so weak and rightfully disorientated that she could easily have been mistaken.

“I don’t know. There’s a lot of snow and trees outside though.”

Cary glared at her through her mess of tangled hair, her frustration only growing as her refocusing of her gaze led her to realise that the lenses of her glasses were now also slightly cracked (at least it wasn’t so bad that she couldn’t see through them anymore), “Thanks, you’re a great help. Where are the others?”

“They went outside, to look around I guess.”

Determined not to be left behind by her abnormal acquaintances, Cary summoned the energy to stand and with the assistance of only a few handholds made her shambling way out of the craft, leaving Eve to follow at her own pace.

The sun was almost at its zenith, visible through the canopies of the countless trees surrounding them. Strangely the air felt like it should have been biting her skin with cold, however that precise sensation was absent. Cary found Philip and the rest talking animatedly in a circle not far from where the ship had landed. Her lurching approach couldn’t have been less stealthy.

“Where are we?” she demanded on moving within earshot, cutting their current conversation short while then gesturing to her glasses. “And what are any of you going to do about this?”

She was just near enough to hear Tony sigh, “I told you to wait for them so you wouldn’t have to repeat yourself.”

But regardless of his friend’s cynical views, Philip graciously answered, “We’re on an island near Florida.”

At these words the disgruntled girl stopped in her tracks, an unfortunate thing as her foot was half way over a thick tree root, the subsequent trip ruining whatever limited finesse she’d had. He couldn’t be saying what she thought he was saying.

“You mean we’re back where we started?”

“Not exactly,” Philip contorted his face as he chose his words carefully. “What can I say...Welcome to the end of the last Ice Age.”

From the look on the girl’s face this had the desired effect of shocking her into silence.

“We are currently being maintained in one of the universes in the Alpha Realm, so from your point of view we are in a frozen moment of time,” Ylem elaborated.
