Chapter 19

A Still Small Voice

Breck was in total shock. The President must have just sent this message tonight. Agent Breck Esell had built a fortress of respect for the President in spite of being in complete opposition to the Liberal ideologies that Christopher Janus vigorously promoted. Breck would have given his life to protect the President. Now he began to realize that he was exposed to the highest risk possible. That risk wouldn’t come from some outside threat but from the man he swore to protect. The recording continued.

“I know you are probably flabbergasted, but I need you to focus. What I’m about to tell you is extremely important to your immediate future. I know what happened back in Honduras. I know that you and your men got cut to pieces because of an order from headquarters and you were the only one to survive….Maybe it was dumb luck or you’re just that good, but it is very suspicious that you were the one to receive the command to stand down and you were the only one to survive…”

Breck was horrified. He didn’t even know how to react to what he was hearing. The President of the United States was communicating to him through a recording admitting to conspiring in a crime. He dug up ancient history and apparently was going to use it against Breck in some way.

“I think you were fortunate to have this information buried from the public. Somehow you were able to escape media scrutiny and was able to land the job on my detail without a hitch. No one knows how you got out alive that day and no one else did..Why didn’t you verify the stand down order. Do you know who it was that gave the order? Seems to me like you should have at least gotten a court martial. Breck you do know that there are no statute of limitations on federal prosecutions. ….. You could still do real time if a trial went sideways. ……….Needless to say, I have a proposition for you. To keep your dirty secret in the dark, and to avoid going to jail you will be wise to consider it. Remember you have a daughter to think about. By the way, I hate that I have to do this to you because you have served me well but the greater good of the country is at stake. I need you to come to the Whitehouse immediately. I will have the instructions for you and my plans for you. Have no fear Breck, you cooperate and you will be able to write your own ticket.” Janus’s voice was so confident.

Brecks anger was rumbling like the ground underneath a herd of stampeding bison. This was the greatest of offenses. Betrayal. Breck couldn’t believe that the man he had devoted his life to protect was actually a villain. One thing was for sure, Breck knew that this placed him on a path in opposition to the most powerful man in the free world.
