Chapter Eleven

Shiro delivered dinner for me right before Seia closed the gate. We both agreed that it would be better for me to remain outside the temple walls until the threat passed. If possible, I could take down whatever it was myself. My feet crunched against the ground as I patrolled the area, my body vibrated with her. Dusk turned into night as my search for the threat continued.

Seia’s power surged through me. All of my senses were on fire. Everything was sharper. I could see through the darkness as though the night did not affect me. My reflexes surprised me by how quickly I was able to move. The power within Seia was unlike anything I experienced. Even Misery was no match.

The night was unusually quiet. The nocturnal animals did not make their presence known like they normally did when I was on evening patrols. The night was different. At least we were warned in advance, especially with so many travelers at the temple. We told no one of the danger, it would do no good to make them worry. Seia had to carry the burden alone for so long since the order of Iren was small in number, my presence was a luxury.

A spirit that wanted the power of this land.

There was immense power that flowed from the spring, not even I could not deny its draw. Our world was blessed with magic, and most claimed it was simply the leftovers of Iren’s power. At the Amber Temple, I started to truly believe that there was something to the tales aside from another group that tried to maintain power through myth.

Seia’s magic glowed around the central temple. It looked like a glass dome over the temple, I was able to see it clearly, thanks to her milk. Her taste lingered in my mouth. Everything I would taste afterward paled in comparison to the vibrancy of her.

Faster, and faster, I ran through the forest, my body able to reach speeds I was never capable of before. As I patrolled the grounds, I noticed an odd familiarity with every branch and rock. I simply knew. I understood this land. It must have only been a fraction of what she could see. Another gift from Seia.

The power that flowed through me was something I craved when I was younger. The ability to avenge my family. I got what I wanted. Fled. Wandered.

I wanted to protect. To have a reason to have such strength—the Amber Temple gave me a purpose that I needed. To feel wanted. Nothing would take that from me.

A whir of a bell stopped me in my tracks, an unfamiliar sound.

My head whipped around as I focused on the sound. I closed my eyes. Focused.

My feet took me towards the sound, my senses ran wild with the echoes and smells I picked up. The sound grew as I ran closer to it. Any ounce of hesitation I swallowed as I was guided toward the spirit that threatened the temple. Seia and I promised that we would fulfill our duty.
