“Yeah, I guess,” Maddie said.

“Plus timing, we barely escape the police when we bust something,” Liv said reasonably.

“It’s frustrating,” Maddie admitted.

“We’ll get a break soon,” Liv said optimistically.

“Let’s brainstorm. Where would you hide incriminating evidence?” Maddie said, lighting the candles in her room.

“Car?” Liv suggested.

“Maybe, Work office?”

“Hmm not enough security,” Liv thought aloud. “Anyone could walk in and snoop.”

“Hidden doorway in a library,” Maddie suggested half-heartedly.

“Wait,” Liv said, causing Maddie to look puzzled.

“I was joking.”

“No, think about it,” Liv said, pacing, “anyone could walk in and snoop around an office, nobody could snoop around something hidden…”

Alright you’ve lost me,” Maddie said.

“Where are places in which nobody knows about?”

When Maddie looked blankly at her Liv continued, her thoughts racing.

“Safety deposit boxes, storage units, underground bunkers. They have people on payrolls, contact details, guns drugs and god know’s what else!”

“So you think they must have a storage unit!?” Maddie said, playing catch up.

“Paid for in cash, using a false name,” Liv said finally.

“I’ll start googling,” Maddie said quickly.

“It would have to be close enough to both offices, so that they could get there in a hurry during an emergency.”

“And close to the docks?” Maddie suggested.

“Yeah!” Liv said, “Have you found one?”

“I have!” Maddie said, showing her the laptop screen. “Now what?”

“We meet with the mayor... Tonight, I have a plan,” Liv said cunningly.

“I’ll text her a location and time.” Maddie looked proudly at her sister.

That night, they met in the shadows of an upper level, multi-storey car park.

“What can I help you with, girls?” the mayor asked.

“Ask Liv?” Maddie said. “It’s her grand plan and I don’t know it yet.”

“We need you to go to a storage unit as soon as possible. You’ll go and discuss with the owner, saying a new bill has reached your desk. This bill would discuss closing cash only loopholes, for businesses such as his and pawn shops. You’ll ask him about his cash buyers, see how many of them pay weekly, monthly. Or years in advance. You’ll discuss how some people do this to keep them under a certain tax bracket and perhaps they’re subletting and thus making the money back.”

“Hint as those who have paid for a locker months or years in advance?” The mayor said, nodding slowly.

“Exactly,” Liv said. “Manipulate as much information out of him as possible.”

“You’re better at thinking than you are avoiding being stabbed,” she said with a hollow laugh.

“You’ll do it?” Maddie asked.

“Certainly!” the mayor said. “I have a spot in my schedule tomorrow, you should be able to scout the place out tomorrow night.”

“Thanks! Perhaps go to other lockers and pawn shops for authenticity, if possible,” Maddie said.

“Naturally, I can do that,” she whispered.

“Now we must all be going,” Maddie said, looking around sharply.

The day had never gone so slowly as the next day did for either Maddie or Liv, they spent the next day constantly waiting for a vibration on their phones. Waiting for the mayor’s information.

“You need to do a better job at pretending you’re not stressed as fuck,” Deanne said to Maddie in their second lesson of the day.
