Mortal Kombat

Acclaim - 1993

Midway’s Mortal Kombat arcade game revolutionised the fighting game genre when it was released in the arcades. It threw away the cartoon like animated sprites of games like Street Fighter 2 and replaced them with digitised fighters that used motion capture to perform every action. But the realistic looks were not the only thing it added, there was something even more real to life - BLOOD! Not just a little either there was loads of it at the time and it caused outrage in the press, thus getting the game even more attention! This wasn’t all though, it increased the gore further by adding another new feature to fighting games - finishing moves! When you defeated you opponent you were asked to “Finish him!” and with a few button presses you could perform one of these lethal moves that did such things as rip out the foe’s beating heart or remove his spine! When Acclaim announced they were converting the arcade game to the MD and SNES kids across the world couldn’t wait. And very soon Sega were laughing all the way to the bank when it was also announced that due to the family friendly image of Nintendo their version of game wouldn’t feature any blood and many of the moves were also being removed! Played today the game does seem a little lacking compared to other fighters and you just cannot ignore the far superior MK sequels. That said it’s a nice piece of history in video gaming.
