I am sure we all know that as well as going for insanely high prices on eBay, the CD-i Zelda games also have a very bad reputation among gamers in general. Personally speaking, I have never been a fan of Zelda games anyway, so was just waiting to see exactly how much I would hate this game. However on this occasion I was pleasantly surprised and didn’t think the game was anywhere near as bad as people like the Angry Video Game Nerd have made it out to be. It’s not an RPG, as many of you might already know, and instead takes the form of a side scrolling arcade adventure. Think something more like Castlevania or Shadow of the Beast in style. You have to explore the levels as you collect items and defeat the baddies. You can choose where to go on the map and even watch the cringe-worthy cartoon style FMV if you really wish, which tells you the story. The graphics in The Faces of Evil are really nice, especially the gorgeous backdrops, the sound is pleasant enough and the gameplay isn’t too bad either. Although I will say that the control method isn’t exactly ideal here - pressing up to jump and down to pick up objects on a four button joypad is never excusable! But you do get used to this after a while. If you can manage to pick this up for a decent price (like I did) then Link: The Faces of Evil actually well worth a look, there’s much worse games on the Philips CD-i!
