Chapter 27

“No, no, no, no, NO!” Leslie screamed, frantic, as she ran through the cave. When she first returned to Earth, she had been down to the ravine every day to check on the Gate at first light. Today, she realized that it had been over a month since she had so much as been in the area.

Now the light was so dim it no longer lit up the whole of the cave. The light sputtered and looked like it was about to go out at any moment. She could not allow this to happen. The portal looked sick and dying. It was going to die and she was going to be stuck on Earth forever. She’d never be able to see Jaxx again.

Leslie wondered if there was still time to get through, or if the light portal would die halfway through transporting her across the worlds. The door looked like it had run out of batteries. It was only dimly pulsing.

She could not believe such a thing could be true. She ran closer to it, not daring to touch the surface. She drew out her grandmother’s stone and clutched the precious keepsake to her chest. As soon as the stone was close to the Gate, the Gate flared back to life.

Not thinking twice, Leslie leaped through the gate. She fell into the old temple with a thump. Behind her there was a brilliant flash of light before the Gate ceased to exist. She was suddenly in complete and total darkness. She wished that she’d brought along a flashlight.

Still, the temple cave was easy to get out of. There were lights when she last came here. Forcing the panic down, she made her way to the mouth of the temple cave. She hoped that Jaxx had merely stopped lighting the lamps and not that he was gone. She hoped he wasn’t gone. She might as well be on Earth if he was gone.

Once she was out in the light, she pulled out the compass that the Princess Ariana had given her. The object was different from the bauble the Grand Witch had presented her with. While that was just a useless gray stone, this was something that pointed the way towards her heart’s desire.

She thought Princess Ariana intended her to use it if she ever did find her way back into Glittre. Careful to avoid traveling off the trail, Leslie followed the compass as best she could. The trail was in better condition than it had been when she had first come to Glittre. She followed it until she started to hear the song of the waterfall.

Laughing from sheer joy, Leslie ran towards the sound of it. Soon she was at the river. She slipped the compass into her pocket and looked around for a good way to cross. She thought she could make it over the boulders. She tried that. It turned out they were slick from the water and when her foot touched the first boulder, she just slipped off and fell right in.
