Blythe couldnât help but look at everything he passed in a critical light, the streets and buildings around him something few people saw, even fewer had access to. His position allowed him that, though he passed on by, heading to his usual office, the usual select people surrounding him, all with their own ambitions, all with their own vested interests.
Blythe wasnât sure he knew what his were anymore.
As he cleared security at the entrance level to his building, he put his game face on. Banter was loud, Blythe the funny man as usual, making a point of remembering names, reflecting on something someone might have once told him, sharing an in-joke with another. He bounded across the space to the lifts, some greeting him, many knowing to avoid eye contact.
He stood alone in the lift as it carried him effortlessly to the top floor, the elite of the elite.
Blythe spoke to nobody as he made his way to his personal office, a spacious place with views sweeping across the city, the landscape the pinnacle of human engineering, breathtaking to so many. He now only saw buildings and control, the System he represented using the brick and glass, steel and concrete to mask over what really mattered.
Build a high-rise office building. Let people die from curable diseases.
Hand out a million to the retiring heroes. Do everything possible to claw back every penny from those unworthy saps.
Hail the era of freedom and openness. Hoard and pander to the rich and powerful.
Boast of a world without crime and death. Control all by fear and suspicion.
Blythe pulled away from the window; heâd seen enough of that view. He refused to look towards the centre of power, a home that might one day be his new office if he were to become the next leader of this apparently free world.
He walked back out of his office, towards his team, a group of ten people who worked directly for him. He would have to decide who he took with him should he be changing location in the next two years. He was certain some of them were not there because of their support of him.
âI need everything you have available on Miss Katherine Vann,â Blythe said, dropping a one-page document with the womanâs photograph and basic details that heâd printed from the database. It listed her current work address, a job she had held for many years. Aside from that, the information was on a need to know basis. He now needed everything.
The woman took the sheet of paper.
âYouâll have it on your desk within the hour,â she confirmed.
âI want all we know about her research,â he said to the next man, walking on down the room, his team stopping what they were doing with his entry into their section of the office.
âI want anything we have on the family,â he said to the rest of the room.
âAnd our current operations?â someone asked.
âEverything on hold for the moment,â Blythe confirmed. His daughterâs future depended on him
