Kate and Beth walked along the PW&B depot’s platform in Philadelphia. A train from Harrisburg arrived. Beth tried to study each passenger. But she didn't see everyone. Some left for trains. Others arrived and were in the shadows.

Everyone seemed ordinary to Beth. But so had the men in Ferrandini’s home.

The gas lamps glowed weakly.

Kate put down her carpetbag. She pulled out a round watch that had been tucked into her belt. The watch was attached to a chain.

Kate said, “We can board our train now.”

“Which train is ours?” Beth said.

Kate pointed to one that was just ahead of the train from Harrisburg. “It won’t leave for an hour. But we can board. Then we can reserve spots in the front. That way the package won’t have to pass through the train cars. Fewer people will see it.”

Beth understood now. Lincoln was the “package.” He would arrive after everyone else was on board. He would sit near the train car door and be the first person off. It seemed like a good plan.

Just then two men in dark suits got off the Harrisburg train. They walked quickly and seemed confident. One of them lifted his hat when he saw Kate.

Beth muffled a gasp by pretending to sneeze. “Ha-choo!” she said.

“What’s wrong?” Kate asked.

The men approached the train to Baltimore and began talking to the conductor.

Beth leaned close to Kate. “I saw those men in Baltimore,” Beth said. “They want Mr. Lincoln dead.” Beth took a deep breath to steady herself. “The taller one has a pistol, and he’s prepared to use it.”
