CHAPTER TEN
Married.
Fate was married. How had I been so stupid? Someone like Jesse Fateson didn't stay single. I'd noticed he didn't wear a ring, but so few men did. Besides, it's probably dangerous since he worked with his hands all day. Men like him should come with a warning label, a neon sign announcing to the world they're taken so foolish mortals don't set their sights on things that will forever be beyond their reach.
Dammit all, I just felt so damn foolish. For one second yesterday, when he'd kissed me, I let myself believe I was worthy of something good. I convinced myself his abrupt departure had more to do with insecurities than anything else. Who was I fooling? People like Fate weren't insecure.
My whole body felt numb but for the sting of the ocean breeze as it whipped against my cheeks. I'm not sure what had brought me to the base of the cliffs, maybe it was because it was the place we'd first met, maybe it was the memories of exploring the rock pools for treasures left behind by the sea, or maybe, it was simply because I couldn't face going home.
The fine strands of deep green seaweed felt like silk beneath my fingers as I absent-mindedly caressed the rocks, seeking tactile comfort. I'd chosen the small ledge closest to the water, allowing my feet to sway back and forth within the swells, my sandals abandoned near the cliff face, knowing they'd be safe from any waves. No matter how high the tide, the formations nearest the cliff were never fully submerged. Of course, I hadn't known that as a child.
There was something soothing about the sound of the waves caressing the rocks, I could close my eyes and lose myself to the peace, to the sound of seabirds and tranquillity that existed beyond my inner turmoil. Mist clung to my skin and hair from the spray, the cold shivers warning me I'd sat too long in the wind and water, but I just didn't have it in me to move.
I felt ⦠heavy. That was probably the best way to describe it. My mind and body had surrendered to gravity, and no longer had the strength to deny the forces that dragged me down. I shook my head. This was ridiculous. It was just a kiss. My finger traced my bottom lip, trying to remember how it felt, torturing myself with a stolen moment that never should have been mine.
The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting elongated light across the calm surface. For a second I watched the sun sinking to kiss the waters, sending its glitter across the smooth ocean. It was as though I could breathe, as if everything was tranquil and calm.
The growling in my stomach reminded me it was long past time I ate, but the thought of food just twisted my stomach in knots. Sitting here, I could at least pretend the ocean was a salve, washing away my troubles. I was good at pretending.
